PITOT TUBES

The Pitot tube is a very simple device which is widely used for flow measurement of gas or liquid streams in relatively large pipe.
The Pitot tube offers the following advantages:

  • flow turbolence or vortices have little influence on the measurement
  • flow coefficient close to unity
  • none or negligible permanent pressure loss.

Application of the Pitot tube is limited by the velocity of the fluid stream since for very low velocity, the resulting dynamic head has such a low value to become hardly measurable with commercial meters.
